The Lodge

Welcome to the Sharp Island Gorilla Lodge!
This beautiful Lodge, which was opened in 2016, is located on an island in the scenic Lake Bunyonyi in the paradisiacal Kigezi highlands. In the west the forests of Bwindi Forest National Park rise, which houses the mountain gorillas.

The local name of this Island is Njuyera; it has a great history.
For about 50 years, it was the home of Doc Lennen Sharp, a missionary and doctor in the early years of the 20th century. He and his wife made this island a unique place. If you visit it now, you experience the joy of an impressive botanical garden. There are many different plants and flowers from East Africa and a vast population of exotic birds, which can only be found on this island.
The island also offers a spectacular view to the lake and its surroundings at all different angles.

The Sharp Island Gorilla Lodge offers a combination of African flair and European standards. Our lodges incorporate a lot of know-how from Austria. We know what international guests want!
The buildings and furniture of our lodges are made almost exclusively with traditional methods using local materials, thereby creating a unique, quaint atmosphere. The large bathroom area is based on the comfort of European luxury hotels. Here you can find rest and refreshment after an exciting day.

Social traveling

The highest degree of hospitality for a good cause. Both lodges share the same social background: 20% of the proceeds go to projects of the Jane Goodall Institute in Uganda.
We use our long-term experience with aid projects in Uganda to strengthen and support the region and the people who live there, such as the project to support the Batwa Pygmies: as one of the oldest tribes in Africa, they are supported with programs for education, agriculture and water management projects.
Other projects of the Jane Goodall Institute can be found here. (Link)

Activities

An unforgettable experience: Gorilla Tracks
The Gorilla Highlands are home to around half the world's surviving mountain gorillas. Around 400 animals live in the National Park’s forests, which rise up to 2600 meters above sea level.
We organize Gorilla tracks, where you can experience these fascinating animals up close. Anyone who has looked a gorilla in its eyes sees the world differently afterwards: the strength and serenity of the animals; the tender handling of the little ones – you can be sure the gorillas will have a deep, lasting impression on you.
In addition to the gorillas 90 species of mammals, including chimpanzees and elephants, live in Bwindi Forestland.
357 species of birds attract birdwatchers from around the world to Lake Bunyonyi.

Besides Gorilla trekking you can go on boat tours on the lake, go mountain hiking, or do village walks in adjacent villages. You will have the unique chance to get acquainted with the local culture and customs and interact with the inhabitants, a very special group of African people known as Batwa Pygmies.
